Why we organize ??? Summer School

Imagine a group of typography enthusiasts arriving in the forest without their computers, papers and pens. A couple of them find a lake and some clay. One of them breaks a wooden stick from an old and dried log. A fourth one finds a swamp with a half-drowned lone boot. The fifth stumbles on a rock that reminds them of the letter 'R'. Two more wanderers discover an old lawn mower beside the roadside where the grumpy bus driver left them. We are very keen to see what these typography enthuasiasts and experimental minded individuals will come up with in the unknown territory.

The organisers responsible for managing the summer school and well-being of the participants are Aimur Takk, Mathias Väärsi & Vello Lutter. All three have previously finished graphic design department at Estonian Academy of Arts and share an interest in experimental typography and self-initiated design projects. Of course there are many more contributors who will help make ??? Summer School truly unique experience, among others design professor Ivar Sakk with his support and know-how, Maria Muuk with her fascination in the semiotics of food, or Eleonora Šljanda with her unique design language that visually manifests the vibe of ??? Summer School.

Living conditions

The summer school will be held in a rural area, and we will be living and working mostly in outdoor conditions. If you cannot take your own tent, then you have the possibility to sleep in a group tent. For hygiene, we have at our disposal an indoor toilet, sauna with a shower, and, for the courageous, a refreshing lake. Participation fees involve food three times a day; there is a possibility to use a grill at all times. Pack a lot of warm and waterproof clothes as early August weather in Estonia might be unpredictable. Stock up on snacks if you'd like; perhaps bring along your favourite food, or a recipe that we could collectively prepare.

We also want to point out that you will probably not need a laptop, paper or pen throughout ??? Summer School – if possible, don't even bring them along! As we are not in total wilderness nor jungle then we still have indoor facilities where you can safely keep laptops and other electronics or even charge your phone battery.

Participation disclaimer!

Please read the text below before registering to the summer school.

??? Summer School will be held in a rural area where all the participants experience close encounters with nature, forest, water, bugs and insects. Please inform us if you have allergies to bees, flowers or any other elements of the wilderness. The summer school will be taking place on the land of a country house in the Lahemaa national reserve. Transportation is possible by bus and by car. The nearest shop, in the Võsu village, is 9 km away from the workshop site. First aid is also nearby. Tutors and participants will be living, eating and sleeping together for the whole week in a camping-like setting – please pack accordingly. Larger collective tents are available, but everyone is welcome to bring a private tent as well. Please bring your own sleeping bag, or let us know if this is not possible for you.

Introduction

??? Summer School is a week-long experimental workshop with a focus on type design and typography, taking place on August 4–11 in the beautiful countryside of Oandu village, Lahemaa National Park, Estonia. Typography is often closely related to the urban environment but ??? Summer School aims at finding new methods and inspiration in the practice of typography by experimenting with it in rural Estonia.

We welcome graphic designers, artists, theorists, critics, curators and everyone else interested to participate.

Our tutors are Charlotte Rohde & Raphaël Verona + guest lecturers.

Charlotte Rohde

She is a German designer working on the interface of typography and art, currently based in Amsterdam, studying at the Sandberg Instituut. She is researching on how type can be used for embodying and shaping discourses within our society.

Raphaël Verona

In his work type design meets graphic design and sometimes also photography. He aims to create specific typefaces and letterings that brings original and exclusive design to its editorials / identity projects: some kinds of made-to-mesure typographic systems which constitute a major aspect of its approach. Letters become narrative images and patterns. On June 3, 2019 he launched Altiplano, his own type foundry.
